The open house for the Creston Community Building was a big success with many, many former residents, scholars and teachers and their families participating. Clive Sheppard who taught at the school back in the 1930s was likely the oldest man there although there were folks from Florida, Maryland, Ohio, & Pennsylvania. Many old friends got together, folks looked at pictures, read family history and ate good food. They also liked the old time classroom in a section of "the little room". Two special cakes were baked with one having a picture of the school house before being painted while the other was an after picture. All the visitors were pleased by the work that was done. At least two of the folks had not been back in over 50 years. Betty, Helen and Hayley were in charge of the goodies.

It was reported that Gray Campbell has been having eye troubles. He was not able to visit in Creston over the weekend.

Carl Ferrell was consulting his physician and is anticipating surgery on his arm. Carl is "real happy".

Rev. Juanita Lockhart filled her regular appointment at the Burning Springs M. E. Church. The interior of the church now has a new coat of paint and new ceiling tile has been installed.

The Cedar Grove homecoming was held on Sunday at the church on the West Fork up above Creston.

Rain continues to be the norm with hardly a dry day. Last week there was a cloudburst up on Daniel's Run and environs and the West Fork raised about 11 feet in two hours at Rocksdale. A four foot wall of water came down through Creston and the main Little Kanawha ran backwards for a while. A dead yearling was in the water wall.

This week the cloudburst was in the Newark country with the Wirt County fair being blocked off by Lee Creek. Travel was restricted to the road out to the Beulah Humble Presbyterian church. The track area was completely under water and so it went. Other that the wet Saturday night the fair went well with Wirt County's heroine and family making a very popular visit. Over on the Newark side the road was blocked by surface water and overflow from the nursery pond, etc.

Logan Lowe who is the comely young daughter of County Commissioner Robert Lowe, seemed a little concerned when she spotted Jessica, a person she knew from the TV. She asked her father what she should do and if things were all right. Father said, "If you are concerned, just go up and talk to her." She did and engaged the Mayberry Run resident in conversation. Afterwards she came running back to her father and said, "She talked to Me!" One couldn't find a better example of sincere respect for a true celebrity.

Another woman had Jessica hold her baby so she could obtain a picture of her children with Pfc. Lynch

Annamoriah resident Emma Miller who exhibited both a heifer and a hog as 4H projects was the subject of considerable discussion in the media as were other youth who participated in the fair. The sale of livestock may have set a record with the top hogs fetching $6/cwt and the top pen of bunnies fetching $1000.

The Sassy Storekeeper had to go out on the Mt. Zion ridge and show 'em how to do it. Now that the Great Pifu and the Canada fishermen are back they can have shiny floors. It was suspected that the Pifu and his sidekick stopped at Detroit and trolled for carp so they would have some biguns to show off their fishing prowess.

Folks who were down in Elizabeth last Monday got to see the action when the lightening hit the court house and then Wednesday evening when Anyce McFee's house burned. The daytime was taken up by the harvesting of "new" agricultural crops by the fellows in big green hats who use whirleybirds to locate the plants. Thursday night they had a big bonfire down behind the local barracks which was still smoking on Friday morning.

On the big market crude oil rose to $32.85 while the local price is $29.00. Various utilities have indicated that they would raise their natural gas prices by substantial amounts. Columbia Gas, which is one of the biggest outfits, is paying royalties based on $3.25 gas so they should have fun explaining a big jump.

Two representatives of the state tax department were in Creston doing audit type work and pointing out that new forms will soon be used to advise the folks down at the Mouth of Elk River about the volumes and value of produced hydrocarbons. The Calhoun road crew was placing some hot mix on Hardman's Fork and Rowell's Run. Some of the trucks hauled up by way of Goose Nest hill

. Jim Bush cut some hay up at the S. R. Lynch residence but it ended up being well washed.

The West Virginia Trophy Hunters have a big gathering scheduled on August 16 at their range on Crane Nest Run (up from the old Pee Wee school). DNR head, Ed Hamrick has committed to attend and it is anticipated that Gov. Wise will also attend. It will be a good time for local residents to get to talk with the state leaders.

Area residents have been hoping for a few clear nights so they can view Mars in the sky. According to reports the last time it was this close was about 60,000 years ago - back before the ice ages, etc.

The Wirt County Farm Bureau will hold its regular monthly meeting August 19 at the road garage in Elizabeth. All members and friends are invited to attend.
