4-H "CLOVER CAMPAIGN' ONE BUCK AT A TIME - Helping 4-H Camps And Projects

(08/07/2003)
By Lew Holloway, WVU Extension Agent

During the month of August, community members, businesses and organizations of Calhoun County will have a unique opportunity to show their support for the local and statewide 4-H program. The county office of the WVU Extension, in collaboration with the state Extension Service Development Office, is sponsoring a month long fund raising campaign.

The campaign, titled the "Clover Campaign," is designed to raise funds for county 4-H programs as well as for the state Centennial Fund for 4-H Project Publications. Paige Toney, Program Assistant for the Calhoun County Extension Service, is leading the county "Clover Campaign." Paige is contacting local community members, businesses, and organizations to request their participation. Businesses will be asked to work with the county extension office to provide 4-H "Clover Cards" to their patrons in exchange for a $1.00 donation to WV 4-H.

Toney will encourage businesses to display the "Clover Cards" they receive a donation for in their store windows. Through the $1.00 donation, people across the county will provide much needed resources for the county 4-H program.

Fifty percent of what is raised will stay in the county 4-H program and be deposited directly into the county Camp Fund. The other fifty percent will be used to provide resources for 4-H project publications and curriculum materials through the Centennial Fund for 4-H Project Publications. As of 2002, WV was one of only five states to provide 4-H members project publications at no cost. The Centennial Fund will make sure this continues to be the case.

Three Hundred eight youths participated in camps; special-interest and community clubs; Cloverbuds; 4-H After-School; 4-H Up All Night; ski trips; shooting sports; WVU 4-H basketball and football days; 4-H Day at the Legislature; and Energy Express in Calhoun County during 2002. All of these youths had opportunities to become involved with their peers and older adults in action learning activities instrumental in developing leadership skills that contribute to their ability to sustain our community and its families.

Please help by making a $1.00 donation to the "Clover Campaign." Encourage local businesses to become involved and display the "Clover Cards." The "Clover Campaign" allows everyone to show their support for the youth of Calhoun.
