WIRT RAIDERS ATTACK POT PATCHES - Police Net $3 Million

(08/06/2003)
Pot busting was into its third day Wednesday in Wirt County with a least 1,000 marijuana plants found over three days. The plants reportedly have a street value of $3 million.

After some problems with the weather, the Wirt and Wood County Sheriff's Departments, the Parkersburg Narcotics Task Force and the West Virginia State Police, chopped pot again today, or some locals were calling the squad the "Wirt Raiders," after the local high school team.

The pot busters used a chopper from Wood County and ground vehicles to target patches, most of which were located from tips given to the police.

About 400 marijuana plants worth about $1 million were seized Tuesday during an all-day search and seizure mission in Wirt County.

Officials said they consider the seizures a big success, although no arrests were made.

Sheriff Andy Cheuvront said Tuesday's seizure was one of the largest in recent Wirt County history.

The Task Force apparently had an "embedded" reporter from the Parkersburg News, who reported the step-by-step operation.
