POLICE INVESTIGATING BRIDGE VANDALS - Wirt Bridge Painted With "Statements"

(08/01/2003)
The vandalizing of the World War II Veteran's Bridge at Elizabeth is being investigated by police, according to Alvin Engelke, supervisor with the West Virginia Department of Highways in Wirt County.

Graffiti and obscenities were painted on the parapets, the floor, the guardrail and the approach to the bridge.

Most of the statements were directed toward police, minority groups, and sexual behavior. The graffiti also touched on "raiding the patch." A negative comment regarding Pvt. Jessica Lynch was spray painted on a metal sign.

The highway department spent part of a day taking care of the problem, said Engelke.

It is the second time the bridge was vandalized. Obscene pictures and comments were painted on the bridge shortly after it was completed.

The new Route 5 bridge across the Little Kanawha River was dedicated a few months ago to World War II vets.
