FORMER GOV. UNDERWOOD RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL - Receives New Pacemaker

(07/30/2003)
Former Gov. Cecil Underwood was released from a Charleston hospital Monday after receiving a pacemaker and a defibrillator.

Underwood was admitted to Charleston Area Medical Center last week with a low heartbeat after collapsing at a rest stop along I-79 near Gassaway.

The 80-year-old Republican had been driving on Interstate 79 to a meeting in Pittsburgh when he began feeling fatigued and pulled over.

Underwood had an aortic valve replaced and a four-way heart bypass procedure done in February.
