WIRT HELPS SECOND NATIVE SOLDIER - Sgt. David Bell

(07/20/2003)
Residents in Wirt County aren't focusing all their attention on just one injured war veteran.

A dinner in Elizabeth raised $2,000 dollars for another Wirt native, Marine Sergeant David Bell, who hasn't lived in the county in eight years.

The twenty-seven-year-old instructor at the Amphibious Assault School Battalion at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, was seriously injured during a training accident involving a jammed 40-millimeter grenade launcher. It cost him his left eye.

His parents, Ernie and Betsy Bell, and older brother Daniel, said David always wanted to be a Marine.

Betsy Bell says she doesn't know what the family would have done without all the community support. The family needed money to fly to California, among other expenses.
