ATV RIDERS LOST IN BEAR FORK - "This Was A Good Ending"

(07/06/2003)

Ohio Couple with Sheriff Allen Parsons, relieved

"This was a good ending call, for a change," said Sheriff Allen Parsons. Two lost ATV riders lost their way in Bear Fork country, after leaving a family gathering Saturday afternoon.

Eric Lawson, 19, and Melissa Schartiger, 17, of Massilon, Ohio left the Schartiger family barbecue for a spin. Several hours later, family members called for help.

After family members and neighbors failed to locate them before dark, Sheriff Parsons called for additional 4-wheelers to start a more intensive search in the remote area.

Dozens of people with 4-wheelers responded, gathering at the Brian Hastewell residence on Frozen Run.

Before the second group of searchers departed, the couple returned, unharmed and relieved.

"This is what is great about living here. People come out and help whenever they're needed," said Hastewell.
