HIGHWAY PROJECTS AND REPAIRS ANNOUNCED - Slips, Paving And Improvements

(06/25/2003)
State highway funds are scarce because of winter expenses, snow storms, ice storms and floods, not to forget the large amount of rainfall this spring which has continued to cause slips and slides. Highways have been heavily damaged this past winter.

However, Calhoun's DOH has announced several local projects.

The State of West Virginia authorized funding of $250,000 for damages sustained from May flooding to Calhoun County. The use of this money is subject to termination on June 30th. DOH officials have requested an extension.

"It is impossible to complete repairs by this date, but have received no confirmation on the extension," said DOH rep Joan Satterfield.

WV 16 at Calhoun Middle/High School (CR 16/37) - Turning lane for north bound traffic on WV 16. Caution: One-way traffic in this area regulated by stop lights.

WV 16 near Minnora School - Slip repair estimated at $100,000.00. Slip repairs are to be completed prior to June 30th, to avoid losing funding from May flooding that was state authorized. Requesting extension on work.

CR 16/34 - North-side Grantsville - Two slip repairs in progress. First slip occurring from March flood - FEMA authorization for $40,000 - MP 0.65. Second slip resulting from May flooding with state authorization of $10,000.

CR 9 - Barnes Run - Tentatively scheduled for paving, due to excessive damage from utility vehicles during ice storm repairs. (Confirmation of this project coming).

WV 5 - Contract paving from Stutler Road to Creston Bridge in progress.

Big Root and Leafbank - Paving sections complete.

Storage lot at DOH County Headquarters - moving storage lot from Grantsville to DOH headquarters. The appraisal for this property was based on same criteria used in purchasing the new county high school property. Both pieces of property were purchased from the late Mrs. Dorothy Nester.

CR 4 - Yellow Creek - Slip repair in progress. Paving is on hold until next year due to a water line problem.
