ELIZABETH RESTAURANT IS FAMILY TRADITION - Third Generation Calhouners

(06/24/2003)
Mike's Place, Elizabeth's No. 1 family restaurant, is under new management.

Charles and Lisa Laughlin of Arnoldsburg are the new owners of the well-known eatery, with the name now changed to "Mom's Place."

It is well-known to me as a daily stop on those hundreds of trips to Parkersburg, cutting through the backwoods through Annamoriah to Elizabeth. It was a wonderful morning place, the local men coming in to argue sports and politics, all of them gentlemen. Lots of laughing and carrying-on at Mike's Place, before the food was served.

The food was inexpensive, the coffee great and the service, far better than most people are use to these days.

Helen Burns, a former Calhouner and Lisa' mother, has operated the establishment for several years. Helen will still be cooking the specials and baking those great pies, although she is semi-retiring.

Lisa's daughter, Erica Cottrill will be manager and keep the evening shift open, she part of the third-generation operation. She resides in Elizabeth.

The rest of the staff will remain the same.

The telephone number is the same - 275-3928. The hours are 5:00 am-6:00 pm Monday to Friday, with the Friday and Saturday hours are 5:00 am -2:00 pm.
