TSA TO CUT AIRPORT SECURITY - Byrd & Rockefeller Oppose WV's 34 Percent Loss

(06/19/2003)
Senator Robert C. Byrd says West Virginia is losing big in the Transportation Security Administration's plan to cut airport security personnel.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials want to cut 6,000 airport screeners nationwide this year to save $320 million.

Senator Byrd's office conducted a state-by-state study of the federal agency's proposal. The study shows West Virginia will lose more airport security staffers than any other state except Utah.

West Virginia has nine commercial airports, they will lose 56 of 165 TSA officers assigned to screen passengers and luggage, under the proposed plan. West Virginia's 34 percent cut is exceeded only by Utah's 38 percent reduction. The average cut is eleven percent. Alaska, is the only state to be allotted more screeners.

Both Senator Byrd and Senator Jay Rockefeller are asking the TSA to review the cuts.
