The June meeting of the Calhoun County Family Resource Network included a presentation by the Little Kanawha Bus Co., grant contract announcement, reports on the Arnoldsburg Health Fair & the Time Capsule ceremony, new board member, committee reports, and calendar items.

A featured presentation was given by Darlene Hickman, Program Manager of the Little Kanawha Bus Co. The program was started in 1998, and provides public transportation. Their vehicles consist of 5 buses, a mini van, and a Subaru. Handouts were distributed with detailed information about the program, including rates and route information. Contracted rates are available for groups. Caregivers ride free, with those needing assistance. For details, call Community Resources, Inc., at 354-9265. Presentation for July will be the County Commission, by Rick Sampson.

It was reported that attendance was down at the Health Fair in Arnoldsburg from last year, with about 55 blood draws.

The chair reported, the time capsule was buried with a plaque on the site near the Stevens School. There were many interesting items provided for the capsule, including a DVD and scrapbook from SCAT, personal computer, electric toothbrush, family history, and much more. She reported, the park is a great asset to the community. In addition to having the Stevens School (one room school house), there is now an excellent walking trail, and the Jarvis Store is to be moved there. These will serve as community treasure and a tourist attraction.

An announcement was made by Peig Schmitz, chair, that the FY 03-04 Grant Contract has been approved by the Governor's Cabinet on Children and Families, at the current amount of $40,000.

Business items included year end budget discussion, Donna Steigleder was welcomed as a new family representative to the Board, and Greg Cartwright will now chair the Ed/Econ Committee.

A "SAFE KIDS DAY" event was announced for July 23, 9-12 noon, at the Calhoun Middle/High School. The event is being planned by the newly formed Safe Kids Chapter, under the auspice of the FRN Health & Safety Committee. The committee wrote a Community Based Initiatives (CBI) Grant to fund the start up of a Safe Kids Chapter and the Safe Kids Day event. The event is being planned in conjunction with the summer Energy Express and Lights On programs, but the public is also welcome. Activities are still in the planning stages and will be announced later.

Carlene Frederick was present to thank everyone for the support she has received over the past years for the Tobacco Prevention program. At the end of the month she will no longer be the coordinator for the Tobacco Prevention Programs in Calhoun County. The position will be part of a Regional Coordinator's role.

FRN invites community members to attend monthly meetings, held the first Monday of each month, 9:30 a.m. at the FRN office, located under J&B Drug Store, at the corner of Court and Mill Streets. The next FRN meeting will be July 7th.
