CINDY SELF DROWNS IN WEST FORK - Vehicle Submerges In Rain Swollen River

(06/17/2003)
Sixteen-year-old Cindy Ann Self of Arnoldsburg died when her auto plunged into the rain-swollen West Fork of the Little Kanawha River Monday evening.

The accident happened near the intersection of Sinking Springs and Altizer Road shortly before 5:30 pm.

She was a student at Calhoun High School.

Self's 1995 Chevy Lumina apparently went out of control after her vehicle dropped off the pavement and she met an oncoming truck.

The driver of the truck and a witness to the accident, Aaron Allison of Orma, pulled the Self car with a chain in an effort to gain access. He and a friend made efforts to remove the victim from the submerged car.

They were treated for exposure to cold water.

Calhoun EMS and members of the Arnoldsburg Volunteer Fire Department attempted to revive the girl after she was extracted from the submerged car.

Craig Gherke, a diver with the Grantsville VFD, searched the submerged car for other victims. None were found.

The victim is the daughter of David and Teresa Self, who live at the mouth of Henry's Fork and Altizer Road.

The Self's experienced another family tragedy about two years ago when an explosion set fire to their home on Altizer Road, destroying it.

The victim was taken to Roane General Hospital in Spencer. Calhoun County Sheriff Allen Parsons is investigating.
