LIGHTS ON! SUMMER PROGRAMS - Will Commence June 23rd

(06/17/2003)
The Lights On! summer programs for students will begin Monday, June 23. Except for the credit recovery program for high school students, which is taking place at the Career Center, programs for all levels will take place at Calhoun Middle/High School. Openings are still available for the elementary programs and for the Middle School Summer Institute. Call the Lights On! office at 354-7595 to enroll, or for further information.

The afternoon programs for elementary students begin with a week-long Computer Camp, which runs from June 23-28. Bette Ritchie, Carol Dye, and Scott Montgomery will be heading up the camp, which drew enthusiastic responses last summer. Computer Camp will be followed by a four-week-long Summer Academy, which will offer a wide variety of academic and non-academic activities. The sixth-and final-week (July 28 - August 1) will offer students their choice of an Art Camp led by Jo Mollendick or a Science Camp led by Chas Lazreg. There will also be a morning Bridges program for pre-K and kindergarten students, offered on the same four weeks as the Summer Academy.

The Middle School Summer Institute runs for six weeks, from June 23 to August 1. It provides a wide variety of possibilities for students who just completed grades 5, 6, 7, and 8. Many students have signed up to take advantage of the free recreation, art classes, guitar lessons, lessons on a variety of wind and string instruments, and a chance to learn video editing and newscast skills. Other students want to bolster their academic skills, to help increase their chances of success in future classes. And still others are making up one or more core courses they failed during the school year, so they can advance to the next grade when school begins in August.

There will be buses running the main routes. They will arrive at the Middle/High School at 8:30 a.m., and leave at 3:30 p.m. There will be no midday bus run. Students from Energy Express may stay and participate in Lights On! programs if parents wish.

Breakfast will be served at 8:30, and classes will start at 9. Morning classes will end at 12, and lunch will be from 12 to 12:30. Afternoon classes will run from 12:30 to 3:25.
