FERGUSON BEING RETURNED TO SPENCER - Chief Williams Going To Indiana

(06/13/2003)
Spencer Police Chief Gary Williams is making a six-hour trip to Indiana today to return accused murdered Dreu Ferguson, Jr. back to Spencer. Ferguson is charged with the shooting of William "Wild Bill" Freas, 29, on his front porch this week.

Indiana State Police in Jasper received a report Ferguson had been seen in the area Thursday morning and alerted police agencies in the region. A Crawford County, Indiana, sheriff's deputy spotted his vehicle pulling out of a truck stop about 10:30 a.m.

The deputy pulled in behind Ferguson's car, and he reportedly pulled off the highway prior to the deputy turning on his emergency lights.

He told the officer "I guess you know what I'm wanted for."

Chief Williams said Ferguson was a dangerous man and hated police officers.

Police impounded Ferguson's vehicle, but did not search it, according to Spencer Chief Williams. The chief did not know if a weapon was inside the car. No weapon was found in Ferguson's possession.

Ferguson was being held in a neighboring Harrison County, Indiana jail and waived extradition back to West Virginia.

Ferguson and his next door neighbor William Freas, 29, reportedly had an argument Wednesday morning and witnesses told police Ferguson came up on Freas' porch with a .22-caliber rifle. He shot twice, one shot lodging in Freas chest.

Freas was dead at the scene as Ferguson drove away in his car.

A resident of Roane County for about six years, Ferguson and his 21-year-old wife have been previously charged in the murder of their infant son.
