The Calhoun Commission discussed the possible impact of deep well drilling on the county, during their meeting Monday evening. The current method of taxing oil and gas could place some money in the counties coffers to provide basic services, if deep wells are substantial producers.

A special "get acquainted" Calhoun-Wirt development meeting is scheduled for March 26 in Grantsville at 7 p.m. Officers will be elected from the eight-member board. The two-county authority can leverage more economic development funds, providing matching moneys can be found.

The Commission approved the deed transfer, after legal scrutiny, of its partial ownership of the Calhoun County Committee on Aging property. The $50,000 paid the county by CCCOA is being applied to the regional jail bill.

American Red Cross Month has been officially declared by resolution.

The Commission acknowledged the application of a local $20,000 law enforcement grant submitted by Sheriff Allen Parsons.

Tom Fox and Rick Postalwait have been placed on the E-911 Advisory Board.

Permission was given to the Wood Festival to use courthouse property.

Mike Little was hired as a part-time 911 dispatcher.

The Courthouse was declared a smoke-free public building.

The Commission decided to submit a grant application for about $15,000 to improve courthouse security.

A review was made of the current budget ending February 28. A final 2001-2002 budget meeting will be held March 19 at 5 p.m. The Commission approved bonds, bills, wills and corrected erroneous tax assessments.
