TOP HONORS TO BONAR AND HAYMAKER - Calhoun High Will Graduate 88 Friday

The top academic honors have been announced at Calhoun High School for the Class of 2003. Matthew Bonar has earned the Valedictorian position and Kara Haymaker is the Salutatorian.

The school will graduate 88 students at the 7 p.m. ceremony Friday evening.

School guidance counselor Debra Cunningham said there are "a large number of really good students this year," with scholarships valued over one million dollars to be awarded during Awards Recognition Night Thursday evening. That ceremony starts at 6:30 p.m.

Matthew Bonar is the son of Robert G. and Karen Hoskins Bonar of Grantsville. He has participated in Math Field Day, Knowledge Masters, Know Your State Government Day, Governor's Honors Academy, S.C.O.R.E.S. competition, Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Seminar, National Honor Society, National Honor Society Reporter, Mu Alpha Theta, Class Officer (president and historian), Band (drum major), Choir, Vandalias, Follies Emcee, All-State Choir, West Virginia University Honor Band, Arts and Entertainment Club, Geology/Geography Club, WSAZ "Best of Class". Matthew has done volunteer work on the Stevens School project and with Lions Club activities. He attends First Baptist Church of Grantsville and is a member of Enon Baptist Church.

He will be attending Marshall University majoring in Business.

Kara Haymaker is the daughter of Hays and Martha Haymaker of Grantsville. She has participated in the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Soccer, Dance Team, Academic Team, High Honor Graduate, Honor Roll, and Follies. Kara attends the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church where she is involved in the youth group. She is also in 4-H and a 4-H Teen Leader. Kara will attend Glenville State College majoring in Behavioral Science. She is planning a career as a guidance counselor. on becoming a guidance counselor.
