A letter of resignation was accepted from Opal Harris as board member and chair, stating her current employment did not allow sufficient time for her to do her best in fulfilling her obligation as a board member and chair. The chair position was then filled by Rev. Peig Schmitz, by vote of the membership, and the agency board position filled by Minnie Hamilton Health Care representative, Mariko Hewitt. A family representative position was also filled with Donna Baker Steigleder.

A key informant survey on alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse issues was distributed to the membership and completed. The survey is being conducted in more than 30 counties in West Virginia by the WV Prevention Resource Center at Marshall University Graduate College for the WV Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse. The FRN also participated in the survey by distributing 500 community surveys in the county. If a 10% return is received by Marshall, the FRN will receive a report on data specific to Calhoun County.

In committee reports there was discussion of continued efforts in establishing a Calhoun County Special Olympics. There needs to be someone step forward to take the role of leadership for it to happen. The Safe Kids Chapter was scheduled to meet May 14 for planning of a Safe Kids Day event.

Case manager, Carrie Mann from the Farm Resource Center (FRC) introduced their program and distributed brochures. Her position covers 3 counties and provides free informal counseling and a support system. Questions were raised that there is a need to coordinate with existing programs providing similar services. FRC will meet with other providers.

FRN invites community members to attend monthly meetings, held the first Monday of each month, 9:30 a.m. at the FRN office, located under J&B Drug Store, at the corner of Court and Mill Streets.

BE A VOLUNTEER

The Calhoun Family Resource Network (FRN) is in the process of establishing a community volunteer database. As funding for local activities, services, and events dwindles, we search for ways to help provide needed services and activities for the children and families in our communities. The FRN is in the process of gathering volunteer information that could be shared with community agencies and organizations to help provide for community needs.

Would you be willing to be a part of a community volunteer database? Listings will be as an individual, a youth group, church, civic group, or organization. Being listed in the database does not volunteer you, but merely lists you as a possibility for someone to call, for what ever type of volunteer work you may list.

For instance, a youth group might be willing to volunteer to do spring yard cleanup for an elderly or shut in, or paint a fence, etc. Individuals might be available to do minor home repairs, visiting patients, caring for the elderly, mentoring, or tutoring. Others may have special skills to offer, such as, computer or office skills, musical or art talent, and etc.

Being a volunteer is just that, you fit it into your schedule. You volunteer as many or as few hours as you want. Sometimes an hour of your time can make a world of difference to someone in need of help.

If you would like to be part of the community volunteer database, please stop in or call Sandy Osborne at the FRN office, Corner of Court & Mill Streets, phone 354-7177.
