LIFE RETURNS TO CLEAN-UP - Weekend Storm Now History

(05/13/2003)
The Little Kanawha River went back down yesterday afternoon after it rapidly rose over the weekend to create flooding in low-lying areas.

Some county school buses were unable to run yesterday because of closed highways.

After dozens of thunderstorms moved across the area, causing local flooding, asphalt roads continued to fall apart and a large number of mud and rock slides caused problems for highway crews.

Winds gusted to 50 miles per hour for nearly 24 hours, causing more trees and limbs to fall, many damaged in the February ice storm. Electric service was disrupted in several areas for brief periods of time.

Most damage was experienced by property owners living along small creeks and at the mouths of streams coming from hollows.

Today is the last day to apply to FEMA for damage from the February storm.
