BIG SANDY FURNITURE PART OF SCAM ? - Customers Did Not Get $$Thousands In Rebates

(05/06/2003)
Several area residents have been scammed by an electronic and appliance promotion offered by Big Sandy Furniture.

The West Virginia attorney general's office is investigating a 1993 furniture promotion that promised customers half their money back after ten years.

Big Sandy Furniture officials say the store was only a participant in the promotion and was not responsible, although the store promoted the deal in TV and newspaper ads.

A Spencer resident told The Herald they dutifully held onto the paperwork, hoping to get over $1,000 back on a big screen TV.

The office's consumer affairs division has received about 25 complaints from people who bought furniture and other items during the a "big sale" promotion at Big Sandy.

The promotion was operated by "50 Percent Cash Back" of White Plains, New York, with Big Sandy a participant.

The Customers just received letters saying the company had underestimated the number of people who participated in the promotion.

The letters reportedly indicated the customers would not necessarily receive half their money back, but would get only whatever the company could afford.

A class-action law suit against Big Sandy is being considered by some of the customers who lost several thousands of dollars.
