GLENVILLE STATE BOOSTERS COULD PAY ATHLETIC FEES - School Adopts Pay-To-Play System

(05/01/2003)
Two yet to be named anonymous boosters at Glenville State College have offered to pay the fees being assessed to the school's 170 athletes next year.

GSC, facing a budget shortfall, announced they will be charging $100 in a pay-to-play system for athletes.

Glenville President Thomas Powell said he could not name the donors prematurely.

The school is faced with $700,000 in budget cuts.

Glenville State fields teams in eleven sports.

WVU has cut five varsity sports: men's indoor and outdoor track, cross country, tennis and the coed rifle team. Marshall followed a week later with a decision to cut men's indoor and outdoor track.

Glenville State is believed to be the first school in the nation to assess a fee specifically on student-athletes.
