A Calhoun man has been killed in a single-vehicle accident west of Gallup, New Mexico, near the Arizona state line.

State police say 76-year-old Darrell Collins of Grantsville lost control of his van while heading west on Interstate 40. Captain Tim Baughman says Collins struck a guard rail. Both Collins and his passenger, eleven-year-old Jonathan Collins, were ejected from the vehicle during the impact.

Lieutenant Robert Shilling of the New Mexico State Police said he's not sure what the boy's relationship is to the elderly man.

The child was taken to a hospital and was in critical condition Monday afternoon.

Baughman says another passenger, Eddie Smith, was not injured.
