CRESTON NEWS

The return to the United States of Jessica Lynch, along with the recovery of 7 more POWs has been one of the main topics of discussion in Creston. Local residents take pride in the quick work that America's fighting forces did to Saddam's highly touted army. Some liked listening to "Baghdad Bob" who told about the infidels being 'slaughtered on the walls of Babylon'. He could get a job working with Dan Blather, Walter Crankcase and Peter Arnett. Those who were concerned about how many Iraqi children our troops would kill will be feasting on crow for some time. The word coming back this way from the troops in the field is that they have run out of Copenhagen and want some sent their way. For the culturally imparied Copenhagen is a moist snuff, laced with cayenne pepper, etc., that one rubs.

Don Trimble who lives in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio was among those who called or otherwise sent word that they kept up with the Creston News and agreed with the comments.

Rev. Juanita Lockhart filled her regular appointment at the Burning Springs M. E. church which was all decked out for Palm Sunday. The new sidewalk leading to the handicap ramp was completed with Joe Cunningham being the foreman. Bunk Starcher, Jason Marchuk, Rick McClead, Keith & Kevin Dooley did the hard work. Beaver provided the four wheeler and the wagon to move the concrete and the Pennington family provided lumber and other donations.

Those who love the outdoors and four wheeling are advised to keep April 26 open for the big Creston ATV poker run. There will be some spectacular views and riders will get to go places they didn't know existed.

Cap'n Spock is recovering from carpel tunnel surgery. Dixie, the K-9 quarterback, was filling in for the laid up federation officer.

A group of fishermen are camping and fishing at the old ferry landing in Creston.

Dutchman's Breeches, Spring Beauties, Trilliums, Red Bud, Toothwort, Dog Tooth Violets and other spring flowers are making the area a blaze of colour and beautiful sites.

"Cooter" Marks and sons took their 2, 3 & 4 wheelers over to Rock Run. J. P. wiped out the 3 wheeler against a steep bank.

Jane, Anna and Nancy Engelke attended the Three Rivers Festival Pageant at Fairmont over the weekend. Kim Parrish of QVC Tee Vee fame and Tim Tialdo, the first edition news anchor for WBOY, a Clarksburg Tee Vee station attended the pageant with the Engelkes. One lady who sat on the next row back said, "Kim, I go to bed with you every evening and Tim, I wake up with you every morning."

The local travelers report a new phenomenon. For the first time ever, everyone knows where Wirt County is situate. Jessica has put Palestine and all Wirt County on the map. Now people who live in Parkersburg can say they live near Wirt County.

Nancy Engelke was none to happy to find out that while her car was parked at the motel in Fairmont someone ran into it and then drove away. The rear bumper is sporting a large dent. Earlier in the week someone else scraped the driver's side rear panel. One could guess the high cost of insurance premiums has caused people to hit and run instead of owning up to damaging someone's car.

Mary Kay Marks and Gary Coberly have been working on a slide program showing the navigation and other aspects of the Little Kanawha River. Sunday afternoon they visited the old log boom on the West Fork, the Creston Community Building, Lock #5 at Ivan, Lock #4 at Palestine and Lock #3 (Wells) below Elizabeth. They also checked out Mayberry Run and the greater Palestine area, in honor of Wirt County's heroine, Jessica Lynch.
