LOOSEN THE BELT! - It's Upper West Fork Ramp Day

(04/12/2003)

Get 'em while they're hot

It's the big ramp dinner at Chloe today!

It starts at 4 p.m. There will be ramps, brown beans, bacon, eggs, fried potatoes, salads, desserts and drinks. Adults $8. Children 6-12 $3.50. Children under six FREE.

Directions to the Park are: from US 33/119 go south on Rt 16 10 miles to Park on the right. From I-79 turn on Exit 40 north on Rt 16 10 miles to Park on the left.

Ramp time is here, none too soon. If you research ramp on the net, you'll have to wade through a gazillion listings from wheelchair ramps, skate board ramps to dog and boat ramps...so type in wild leeks, wild garlic or wild scallions and up will pop everything you ever wanted to know about ramps.

You will find how to cultivate them, where to buy seed and how to prepare them. There's recipes for all kinds of fancy ramp dishes, ramps au gratin, ramps with white wine sauce, marinated ramps with toast points, even ramp pudding, heh, heh, heh... But we know how to fix 'em best in these parts and how to enjoy them most, with community dinners. We like to share the delicacy with family and friends, even the drudgery of digging, cleaning and preparing is lessened with the fellowship. Ramp time is a celebration and a tonic for the body and soul.

We use ramp time as an opportunity to raise funds for worthy causes too.

Coming next the MINNORA COMMUNITY CENTER will have their Ramp Dinner on Sunday, April 27 beginning at 1 p.m.

Volunteers are needed to spend a day in the mountains digging (remember it's fun!) those interested will meet at the Center on Saturday, April 19 at 7 a.m. Bring a digging tool and dress for cooler weather.

Volunteers are also needed to clean ramps from April 20-26 (more fun...really!)
