HIGH PRESSURE GAS LINE APPROVED - Stretches From Clay-Kanawha To North Carolina

(04/10/2003)
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission authorized construction and operation of the Greenbrier Pipeline Project. The plan calls for building a 279.4 mile line from Clay-Kanawha counties to North Carolina. No announcement was made when construction might begin.

Opponents of the high pressure 30" line have been asked to appear today at the Clay County Commission meeting.

FERC officials said they approved the project because of forecasts that "continue to project the need for additional infrastructure to meet growing energy demands in the South Atlantic Region."

The Greenbrier Pipeline Co. LLC is a joint venture between subsidiaries of Dominion Resources Inc., based in Richmond, VA, and Piedmont Natural Gas Co., based in Charlotte, NC

Jerry Warren, who lives in Mercer, said he could not understand how the project was approved without proving that the customer base existed.

In studying the environmental drafts filed for the project, Warren said he realized in drawings that are included in the plans that the actual line of temporary clearance will be 100 feet during construction of the line, not 75.

"This is a scar that will not go away," he said.
