MOSQUITOES ARE BUZZING - Prevention Against West Nile Virus

(04/10/2003)
Mosquitoes are already buzzing around Sunny Cal and the region with the West Nile Virus still lurking.

Health officials say prevention is key in avoiding the spread of the West Nile Virus.

Two deaths in Wood County have been attributed to the virus, and a Putnam County resident survived the disease last year.

The Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department says it's best to follow the three "R's:"

- Reduce source breeding areas, like used tire piles where water collects

- Repel mosquitoes by wearing dark clothing and using repellent with DEET

- Recognize times mosquitoes are most prevalent -- early morning and late evening.

A 54-year-old woman and a 78-year-old man died last year with West Nile, both were from Parkersburg.

A 55-year-old Putnam County man became sick in August but recovered.
