| Dale Franklin Levering, Jr., 78, died October 25, 2021 at his family home in the Russett Community of Grantsville, West Virginia surrounded by loved ones.
Dale was born on September 23, 1943 to Dale F. Levering Sr. and Maxine Moran-Levering in Calhoun County, WV. Dale grew up with an innate curiosity to explore and understand the science of the world around him. After graduating from Glenville State College, he earned his Masterâs degree in Botany and a PhD in Plant Ecology from the Ohio State University. His love of learning propelled him through graduate school and onto teaching. Dale authored, âAn Illustrated Flora of the Boston Harbor Islandsâ and led expeditions of graduates, undergraduates, and other interested persons to locate and lecture on the flora ecosystem of the islands. His career as an educator allowed him to share his knowledge with students at Ohio State University, Ohio Wesleyan University, Northeastern University, Tufts University, and the University of Massachusetts. Dale lived in Massachusetts for much of his life before returning to the Mountain State to retire and achieve his ambition of operating a local tavern, the Levering Tin Roof Sports Emporium.
His memory will forever be cherished by Charles Daniel Levering and Benjamin Matthew Levering (his sons from his former spouse Judith Ann White,) their wives Jennifer and Fabi and his granddaughter Sydney Rose. Dale is also survived by his loving sisters Monica Snodgrass and Chris Levering, his brother-in-law Harvey Snodgrass, his nephews John Franklin Kimble, Tyler Levering, Tommy Snodgrass; his niece Sarah Snodgrass; his long-time partner and co-adventurer in life, Nancy Sawyer; his cousin and life-long friend Usher Levering; his cousin Nancy Meteer; and his childhood best friend, Mike Vaughn. He is predeceased by his brother Anthony Douglas Levering and sister Jeanie Levering Kimble Hitchings; Parents, Dale F. Levering Sr. and Maxine Moran-Levering; Maternal grandparents Hezekiah Douglas Moran and Allie Deulley Moran and paternal grandparents Daniel Lloyd Levering and Gertrude Streby Burger Levering Craft.
A private memorial will be conducted by his family. However, as a lover of plant life and a conservationist, please consider planting a tree in honor and remembrance of Dale F. Levering, Jr.
