ALERT: CALHOUN HAS 159+ ACTIVE COVID-19 CASES - Calhoun Schools Closed To Remote Learning

(09/07/2021)
Calhoun has 30 new cases of COVID-19 Monday, added to 129 cases reported for the previous week, now totaling 159 active cases, with a number of other cases from the previous week, which could total up to 200 people having the disease.

Unconfirmed reports say that a number of Calhoun residents are in intensive care.

COVID-19 is taking a toll on Calhoun Schools, Superintendent Kelli Whytsell, reporting last week that 63 students, nine teachers and five service personnel have COVID-19.

That number has gone up, with all Calhoun Schools now being closed, going to remote learning.

The state web site says Calhoun has been averaging 19 new cases daily, an uptick of 1,400 percent in 14 days.

In last week's mid-week report, a total of 300 students had been quarantined since school opened, with a total of 230 students currently quarantined.

Last week, the state COVID-19 MAP said 44% of Calhoun residents are fully vaccinated.

The WV-DHHR Dashboard, last week, showing the most recent cases in West Virginia are in two age groups, ages 5-11 and 12-15. Children under the age of 12 are not yet eligible for vaccinations.

Health officials say 24 more West Virginians have died Monday, three West Virginians aged 50 or younger, including a 50-year-old male from Roane County.

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice said there are 59 COVID-19 outbreaks in schools in the state, some of which have not required the wearing of masks.

As far as other COVID-19 outbreaks across the state, there are 58 outbreaks in long-term care facilities and four church community outbreaks. There are also 88 inmates in the state with the virus and 57 corrections staff members infected.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists all 55 West Virginia counties as having a high risk of community transmission on its COVID-19 Data Tracker map.
