Coronavirus hospitalizations in West Virginia are heading toward record levels for the pandemic.

While Gov. Jim Justice ordered and lifted a mask mandate earlier in the pandemic, he has declined to do so with cases skyrocketing in WV. Several US governors have been opposed to masking, and in those states the cases are at all-time highs.

Ten additional deaths and more than 1,000 new cases of COVID-19 were reported Tuesday by the state Department of Health and Human Resources.

Total deaths are now at 3,084 and active cases at 16,743. Seventy-two of the deaths are from breakthrough cases.

Hospitalizations on the DHHR dashboard are at 640 patients with 203 in intensive care.

Most counties are in the ‘red’ or ‘orange’ high-spread categories on the daily alert map.
