Kerby was taken to Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center

A driver clipped an electric pole south of Grantsville on State Route 16 yesterday afternoon, causing a disruption of electric service in the area for several hours.

Hubert Kerby, 82, of Mount Zion was transported to Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center with what appeared to be minor injuries, but he was then taken to a Parkersburg hospital for further treatment.

Power, telephone and TV cable lines were in the highway, in addition to part of a pole.

Traffic was backed for some distance on Route 16

Jeep heavily damaged

Vehicles were backed for over a mile at one time. School buses and some Calhoun Middle/High School traffic was allowed over the lines after emergency workers built a temporary ramp.

Calhoun EMS and the Grantsville VFD responded to the call about 1:30 pm. The fire department was still on scene at 9:30 pm Thursday, although electric was restored about 8:30 pm.

Sheriff Allen Parsons arrived on the scene to discover the injured driver was his father-in-law.

The Grantsville VFD answered a forest fire call on Broomstick Road at 11 a.m. Thursday. Reports said the fire burned over about one acre before it was put out.
