FRIDAY WV COVID-19 REPORT - 404 NEW CASES, WV 'HIT THE WALL' ON GETTING VACCINES, CALHOUN HAS FIVE NEW CASES THIS WEEK

(04/24/2021)
The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of April 23, 2021, there have been 2,654,442 total laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 150,693 total cases and 2,813 total deaths.

According to DHHR, five additional coronavirus-related deaths were reported Friday along with 405 new cases.

It appears that Calhoun has five new cases this week.

"We have hit a wall. We’ve known this wall was coming. It’s time for West Virginia to move again with ingenuity,” West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice said describing the state’s situation related to COVID-19 vaccinations.

The state has plenty of vaccine supplies on hand, but not enough people coming to get shots, Justice reported, with some counties asking the state not to send more first doses.

Likely to blame is the politicization of COVID-19, with some news sources, social media reporting on conspiracy theories and issuing mis-information, despite the fact that most WV mountain communities historically took the vaccines that ended diphtheria, typhoid, polio and others in the last century.

‘Excess Deaths’ in 2020 surpassed those of 1918 flu pandemic.

Currently, 7,330 cases are considered active in the state.

140,550 West Virginians have recovered from COVID-19 complications.

The DHHR reports 543,654 people are now fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and 694,200 first doses of the vaccine have been administered.
