SMITHVILLE STALWART CITIZEN MCHENRY PASSES AT 84

A stalwart citizen of Smithville, William “Bill” R. McHenry, 84, has died.

Bill was born May 10, 1936 in Smithville, WV a son of the late Glenn McHenry and Margaret (Wright) Oda.

He retired after 40 years of service to Consolidated Gas working as a lineman in the Smithville, WV area. He was a proud veteran of the US Army and was a longtime member of the Smithville Baptist Church where he served as superintendent for over 50 years.

He was a graduate of Harrisville High School with the class of 1955 where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. Bill was a founding member of the Smithville Vol. Fire Dept and was an avid fan of sports especially NASCAR cheering for Jeff Gordon. For many years, Bill helped maintain the Westfall Cemetery in Smithville, WV and also was a Little League coach for Smithville for many years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Joan (Scadden) McHenry; sister, Doris Jean Knight of Cleveland, OH; sister in laws, Pam Scott of Harrisville, WV; Patricia Scadden of Lubeck, WV, and Mary Scadden of Harrisville, WV; cousin, Larry Lee McHenry of Smithville, WV, along with many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents who raised Bill, Albert and Maggie McHenry. Funeral services will be 11am, Saturday, April 24, 2021, at the Smithville Baptist Church with Pastor Charles Leisure officiating.

Burial will follow the service in the Westfall Cemetery in Smithville, WV with full military honors conducted by Harris-Ritchie VFW #3554. Visitation will be 4pm-8pm on Friday, at the Raiguel Funeral Home in Harrisville, WV and 1 hr. prior to the service on Saturday, at the church.
