TUESDAY WV COVID-19 REPORT - New Cases 510, Hospitalizations Up, January Death Count 686, 177,000 WV Pre-Registered COVID-19 Vaccinations, Not Enough To Go Around

Active COVID-19 cases dropped for a 17th straight day in new case numbers released Tuesday by the state Department of Health and Human Resources.

Active cases are now at 20,047, a 610 case decrease from Monday’s report. Hospitalizations have increased by 27 to 465 patients. It’s the first increase in hospitalizations since Jan. 19.

Overall pandemic-related deaths are at 2,031.

The DHHR confirmed 510 new cases Tuesday. The daily positivity test rate is at 5.33%.

177,000 people have pre-registered for COVID-19 vaccinations, not enough shots to go around.

January was the deadliest month for West Virginia for COVID-19, while new numbers show that infections, hospitalizations, and deaths are decreasing heading into the 12th month of the pandemic.

According to an analysis of data from the Department of Health and Human Resources, 686 West Virginians died from the coronavirus in January, beating December’s total of 603 deaths by 14 percent. As of Jan. 31, the state lost 2,028 residents to COVID-19.

There are now 12 counties that are designated red on the COVID-19 daily alert map. 27 are the next level down at orange, nine are gold, five are yellow and two are green.

More than 196,000 state residents have received at least one COVID-19 shot. There are nearly 71,000 residents who have been fully vaccinated.
