MAX DONALD SMITH - Former Munday, Wirt Co.

Max Donald Smith, 76, of Vincent, Ohio died Monday, March 24, 2003 at Marietta Memorial Hospital. He was born Nov. 27, 1926, in Munday, W.Va., a son of Clay and Effie Olive Hammer Smith. He had lived in the Vincent area since 1959. He was a graduate of Wirt County High School, Elizabeth, where he was valedictorian of his class.

He attended Potomac State College, Ohio State University, Ohio University and Antioch College. He received his bachelor of science degree in agriculture from Ohio State University and his master's of science teaching degree from Antioch College. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving from March 22, 1945, to Jan. 29, 1947, as an electronics technician, third class. He had been attending Barlow Presbyterian Church. He taught science and mathematics in Warren Local School District from 1957 until he retired in 1983. He also taught night adult classes at Hocking Technical College, Washington State Community College and Washington County Career Center. In 1968, he was named the Outstanding Science Teacher of Southeastern Ohio and was nominated for Ohio State Teacher of the Year in January 1971 by his school district.

He is survived by his wife, Betty A. Fryman McCain Smith, whom he married January 16, 1997; three sons, Curt Smith and his wife, Vicky, of Marietta, Michael Smith and his wife, Lynn, of Charleston, and Mitchell Smith and his wife, Tracy, of Morrow, Ohio; two daughters, Candace Ross and her husband, Everett, of Lowell and Coleen Wells and her husband, Timothy, of Lockbourne, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Howard Paul Smith; and on Feb. 21, 1996, his first wife, Gloria Thornberry Smith, whom he married Oct. 7, 1951.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 28 at the Barlow Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home. Burial will be in Barlow Central Cemetery. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
