WEDNESDAY WV COVID-19 REPORT - 1,189 NEW CASES, 37 DEATHS - Calhoun Has Nine New Cases Since Sunday, US Reaches High With Deaths

Another 37 COVID-19 deaths were reported Wednesday morning in West Virginia.

The deaths bring the total to 1,671. The state also added 1,189 new positive cases Wednesday, pushing its total from the virus to 104,392. The active total is now 27,982.

Calhoun has nine new cases since Sunday.

Coronavirus deaths in the U.S. hit another one-day high at over 4,300 with the country’s attention focused largely on the fallout from the deadly uprising at the Capitol.

The nation’s overall death toll from COVID-19 has eclipsed 380,000, according to Johns Hopkins University, and is closing in fast on the number of Americans killed in World War II, or about 407,000.

Confirmed infections have topped 22.8 million. Arizona and California have been among the hardest-hit states. The country is now in the most lethal phase of the outbreak yet, even as vaccines are being rolled out.

The overall positive test rate increased from 5.40% to 5.44% Wednesday while the daily positive test rate was at 9.09%, an increase from Tuesday.

There are currently 765 people in the hospital with the coronavirus, including 204 in intensive care and 101 people on ventilators.

At least 74,739 West Virginians have recovered from the coronavirus.

The state reports it has administered 7,215 doses of the coronavirus vaccine since Tuesday’s report. The state has administered 100,696 first doses. The number of doses the state has received was removed from the DHHR’s data dashboard.

There have been 16,434 people in the state fully vaccinated, a relatively small number.
