COVID-19 WV REPORT WEDNESDAY: 953 NEW CASES; 14 NEW DEATHS - Two New Calhoun Cases, US Deaths Reach 250,000, World's Highest

Conditions inside the nation’s hospitals are deteriorating by the day as the coronavirus rages across the U.S. at an unrelenting pace and the death toll surpasses 250,000, the highest in the world.

New York City is closing public schools again as virus cases rise.

Columbia University epidemiologist Jeffrey Shaman said his team’s model estimated that 3.6 million people are infected and shedding enough virus to infect others.

West Virginia health officials reported 14 additional COVID-19 deaths Wednesday, bringing the total to more than 600 since the start of the pandemic.

The latest deaths include a 72-year-old woman from Roane County.

One death reported at the River Oaks Nursing Facility in Clarksburg following a coronavirus outbreak. The outbreak now includes 24 positive cases according to Stonerise Healthcare officials.

Upshur County schools will shift to remote learning until Jan.4, 2021, due to a spike in coronavirus cases in the county and difficulty in staffing the buildings, the school system announced.

The coronavirus has infected 260 inmates at West Virginia’s McDowell County Corrections, by far the largest outbreak at a state prison.

Over the last 24 hours, the DHHR reported 953 new cases, raising the total to 36,277. There were 11,172 active cases Wednesday morning.

As for hospitalizations, there were 429 in the hospital Wednesday, including 126 in intensive case and 50 on a ventilator.

The overall positive test rate moved from 3.31% on Tuesday to 3.35% Wednesday. The daily positive test rate was 5.66%, which is a decrease from 5.72% Tuesday.
