FRIDAY WV COVID-19: 540 NEW CASES - Wirt County Has First Death

The virus is breaking records in WV and the USA.

Wirt County lost its first resident to COVID-19 on Tuesday, a news release from the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department said. Since the pandemic reached West Virginia, Wirt County has had 44 cases of coronavirus, and only 12 were active Friday evening. Eleven COVID-19 cases confirmed in Kanawha schools since Monday, with a revelation that 500 hospital workers in Kanawha County have had the virus since inception.

More than 500 employees across Kanawha County's hospitals have been infected with COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic through the end of October, according to a Freedom of Information Act response from the Kanawha County Health Department.

Officials at Charleston Area Medical Center announced a $1,000 bonus for current employees who worked full time during the coronavirus pandemic.

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reported seven additional COVID-19 deaths Friday.

This raises the state’s COVID-19 death total to 487 since the start of the pandemic.

West Virginia added 540 new COVID-19 cases Friday, for a total of 27,087 cases.

The state’s active case total is at 6,135, which is 243 more active cases than was reported Thursday.

The overall positive test rate slightly increased from Thursday to 3.01%. The daily rate increased from 3.94% Thursday to 4.48% Friday.

There are 280 residents hospitalized with the virus, including 93 people in intensive care and 31 on ventilators.
