FEMA WANTS REPORTS FROM ADDITIONAL COUNTIES - OES Director Says Residents Should Call

(03/20/2003)
Victims of February's winter storm in seven West Virginia counties are now eligible for federal disaster assistance from the Federal Office of Emergency Services. FEMA representatives in West Virginia say those residents, among others from additional counties are seeking the help.

Roane County was the only regional county to qualify, but local OES Director Bill Stemple says Calhoun residents should continue to contact FEMA at 1-800-621-FEMA.

Stemple said residents should be sure and get a contact number when they call.

FEMA Public Information Officer Gil Butler said more than 450 people have applied for aid. The storm was unique since it included floods, deep snow, and heavy ice in different sections.

Applications so far include some homes that were flooded, others had the roof caved in, and some homes were unlivable.

Although only seven counties qualified for individual disaster assistance, Butler says they've received applications from some residents other counties. He says if there are enough applications there could be other counties added to the assistance areas.

The number to apply is 1-800-621-FEMA.
