ROANE RESIDENTS ELIGIBLE FOR SPECIAL ASSISTANCE - Unemployed Could Benefit, Major Disaster Status

(03/19/2003)
Roane County and residents who work in six other West Virginia counties hit hard by winter storms will be eligible for federal disaster unemployment assistance.

Cabell, Jackson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Mingo, Roane and Wayne County were given major disaster status.

The disaster declaration follows severe ice storms, snow storms and flooding in February.

Residents or workers in those counties are eligible for federal money if they are now unemployed, or unable to perform their jobs or reach their place of work because of the storms.

Anyone who is now the primary breadwinner in his or her household because of a disaster-related death is also eligible for assistance.

All initial claims for unemployment assistance must be filed on or before April 17th with the state Bureau of Employment Programs.
