HISTORIC HATHAWAY HOUSES BURNS ON PHILLIPS RUN

(09/15/2020)

The historic two-story Hathaway House, about two miles south of Grantsville on Rt. 16, caught on fire about 5 p.m. Monday, being a total loss.

The Grantsville VFD and Calhoun EMS responded to the blaze.

Dennis Houchin recently purchased the house and property and was remodeling it.

The house was likely built around the turn of the century 1900, and originally included several hundred acres on Phillips Run, stretching to Pine Creek.

The house was located in a pastoral setting with large trees, surrounded by farm buildings, with generations driving by turning an eye to the historic homestead.

The Hathaways, Robinsons, Polings, and Weavers came to Calhoun from Barbour County after the Civil War.

The Hathaways bought property on Phillips Run, Sycamore and Pine Creek, with several generations being born in Calhoun, and in more recent years going on to the bigger world.

The Grantsville VFD returned to the location for a rekindle at 8:45 pm.
