MAN SHOT - Deputies in Nicholas County said a man is in the hospital after being shot during an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement.

It happened about 9 p.m. Saturday. Deputies said they responded to a shots fired complaint in the Phillips Run Road area of Summersville.

Dispatchers said that a man had fired a gun at "multiple" people in the area, according to a news release from the Nicholas County Sheriff's Office.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they say the suspect, identified as Carl Raines, 50, of Summersville, fired a handgun at law enforcement. The release listed Deputy D. Tallamy and Deputy A.L. Shaffer as victims.

"Gunfire was exchanged and Mr. Raines was disarmed after being hit," according to the release.

Deputies said Raines was flown to the hospital due to his injuries.

The incident is still under investigation.
