WOOD MURDER - A man shot his brother nine times, killing him Sunday afternoon, according to a criminal complaint filed in Wood County Magistrate Court.

William A. Nutter, 40, is being held without bond on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of Charles Ryan Cottle.

Nutter was arraigned in Magistrate Court, less than 24 hours after Parkersburg Police responded to his mother’s residence at 1324 Broadway Ave. for a report of shots fired.

According to the criminal complaint, Nutter and Cottle’s mother said Nutter was assaulting her when her other son intervened. Their physical altercation moved downstairs, where the mother reportedly heard loud pops and saw Nutter firing a gun into the kitchen area.

Officers found Cottle with nine gunshot wounds to his torso and hip, the complaint says. Nutter reportedly told officers he acted in self-defense.
