THOUGHT IT WAS A TURKEY -The West Virginia Natural Resources Police are investigating a turkey hunting incident from Tuesday morning in Mercer County.

According to Sgt. C.L Lester of the DNR two victims suffered gunshot wounds in the incident. One victim’s wounds were not serious enough to require medical attention, but the second victim was flown by HealthNet to the Charleston Area Medical Center. The age of the victim has not been confirmed, but he is a juvenile. He was talking to paramedics as he was transported.

Investigators have identified a person believed to be the shooter and are investigating exactly what happened. Lester indicated it appeared to be a case of the victims being mistaken for game. The suspected shooter was not hunting with the victims.

Investigators say the victims were shots came from a rifle while turkey hunting on Camp Creek State Forest around 9:30 a.m.Tuesday.

It’s the second turkey hunting incident of the four week season which opened April 20th.
