CHARLESTON OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING - A man has been identified in an officer-involved shooting Saturday evening.

Police chief Tyke Hunt said in a statement Cole Alexander Sams, 21, is accused of stealing a dump truck and driving it to Spring Street where he allegedly committed a robbery.

Following the robbery, police said Sams then drove the truck to Renaissance Circle where they said he attempted to enter two separate apartments.

Hunt said police were able to isolate Sams in an apartment, but said he refused to drop his gun. A Charleston police officer attempted to use non-lethal options, but the taser did not work, according to Hunt.

Sams was shot in the torso and is currently in stable condition.

Hunt said the motive for the alleged crime spree is unknown.

Sams had a previous warrant for an unrelated breaking and entering charge he’d been found guilty of.

No officers were injured in the shooting.
