Rev. John Lee Lowther, 55, of Vienna

(04/07/2020)
Well done, my good and faithful servant. (Matthew 25:21)

On April 6, 2020, the Reverend John Lee Lowther, age 55, of Vienna, with his loving family by his side, quietly took the hand of his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, and walked into eternity.

Pastor John, as he was lovingly called, was born in Parkersburg, WV, on April 3, 1965, son of Delma (Lowther) Daugherty, who now resides in Hubert, NC, and the late John Lee Lowther. He graduated from Harrisville High School in 1983, where he played football and was a member of the All-State Choir. From his date of graduation, until he suffered a back injury in 1998, John worked as an operator at Troy Mills in Harrisville, WV.

At an early age, John felt drawn to ministry. His youth was spent in the Harmony Mission Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints. Then, in 2002, he began attending St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Harrisville, where he served as a Youth Minister. In 2009, he answered the call to Senior Ministry, attended Pastoral Ministry Licensing School and was appointed to serve Knott’s Memorial United Methodist Church in Grantsville, WV. His final appointment was made in 2014 to the St. John United Methodist Church in Vienna, where he served until the time of his passing.

John’s favorite Bible verse was John 12:32 – ’And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’ He lived his life being a blessing to others by doing just that – lifting up Christ – and many people came to know or draw closer to the Lord through his work.

Pastor John always had a love for music and grew up playing guitar and singing Gospel music with his Dad and family friends. His happiest days were spent working with teens and youth – as a dad to his children and their friends, in youth ministry, as a camp director at Crossroads Camp, or coaching sports. He enjoyed traveling with his family, especially at beaches and campgrounds and spent most of his free time playing golf, fishing and boating.

Left to cherish his memory, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 19 years, Veronica Lynne Lowther; children: Jenna Lowther of Alexandria, VA; Bronson (Sara) Clark of Ona, WV; John Harrison and Elisabeth (Beth) Lowther, of Vienna; grandchildren Brooks and McKenzie Clark; three sisters: Kathryn (Mark) Stanley of Hubert, NC; Margaret (Richard) Props of Harrisville, WV; and Donna (Terry) Mills of Parkersburg, WV; many beloved nieces and nephews; and his in-laws: Dave and Verna Owens of St. Marys, WV.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, a private service for the immediate family will be held at their convenience, officiated by Pastor Rick Shingleton, with interrment at the Harrisville IOOF Cemetery. A Homecoming Celebration will be announced at a later date.

John’s loved ones wish to thank his families at St. John United Methodist Church and Parkersburg Catholic Schools for their love and prayers and his niece Sarah Wilson for the time she devoted to her uncle. They are also grateful to the healthcare workers at Minnie Hamilton Health System, WVU Medicine, Cleveland Clinic, Marietta Memorial Hospital, Ohio State James Cancer Hospital, and Amedysis Home Health Care, who lovingly supported him on his 7 year courageous journey with non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Crossroads Camp for help with the completion of its chapel and multipurpose building. (Crossroads Camp, c/o Little Kanawha District UMC, 3301 Broad St. Parkersburg, WV 26104.)

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. (2 Timothy 4:7)
