SALT SUPPLIES SHORT FOR WINTER ROADS - State $15 Million Over Budget

(03/04/2003)
Winter is taking a big bite out of the Division of Highway's budget, and snow and ice melting salt has been in short supply. WVDOT put aside $25 million dollars for snow removal, and they have already gone through $15 million more.

Calhoun and nearly all regional counties have been short on salt. In Calhoun, for some periods, highway workers were only treating the high risk areas.

With the threat of more winter weather, DOH crews are trying to evenly distribute the salt they have left. They've ordered a new shipment, but the state is not sure when it will arrive.

DOH officials said this week they will spend even more on snow removal before this winter is over, meaning it is likely they will have to cut back on summer paving projects.
