SCHOOLS BUSES CAN CROSS COUNTY LINES - Supreme Court Rules

(03/01/2003)
The state Supreme Court has ruled that a local school board can send buses across county lines to pick up students, even if the neighboring county's school board has not agreed.

The court's unanimous decision was issued yesterday. It settles a legal dispute between the Taylor and Marion county school boards.

Approximately 100 students who live in Taylor County attend Marion County schools. At least of 40 of those do not have the Taylor County Board of Education's approval.

Taylor County school officials said the practice is costing their school system about $500,000 dollars per year in state funding, which is based on enrollment.
