CALHOUN WOODLANDS SEVERELY DAMAGED - Things To Consider

(02/28/2003)
By Russ Richardson, President, Woodland Owners Association of WV Inc.

The forest lands of Calhoun and Roane Counties have been severely impacted by the ice storm.

Since Monday of last week, the Woodland Owners Association of West Virginia has been working very hard to get helpful, accurate and current information on how to analyze the damage to our woodland and how to deal with the anticipated salvage as well as information and suggestions as to how to avoid being take advantage of unscrupulous profiteers that are likely to appear as soon as the skies clear.

On the website which can be reached at www.woaofwv.org

There is a very current paper on casualty losses, something that applies to nearly everyone with timberland in Calhoun County.

Also, we need a Federal Disaster declaration for the damage the ice storm has cause to our woodland. The Internal Revenue Service has all sorts of rules regarding how income from salvage is treated but much of the code does not apply without a disaster declaration by the President.

The website also contains information on how people can assess damage to their forests, how it will impact their trees and the quality of their timber as well as safety suggestions for cutting ice storm damaged timber
