COMMENT By Bob Weaver

It was a sad day for West Virginians, the photographing of a new graduating class of the West Virginia Department of Corrections giving a Heil Hitler salute.

State officials are attempting damage control.

At the very least, such statements and behavior is a sign of the cultural times, not only in West Virginia, but around America.

It would be fair to say that social media allows the most extreme political views to become common, a new normal, and a political establishment in Washington that violates the practice of civility, and ignores the damage being done to constitutional government.

The most selfish interests have overcome the sworn constitutional protections long fought for in war by our patriots. America was once the shining light.

Pure politics, un-pure as they are, have reached new levels of indecency,

I am mostly saddened for the 1,700 Calhoun men and women (and their families) who fought Hitler in World War II.

Can you imagine what the world would be like if Hitler won.

If my way could be had, all the new graduates should be fired, along with their teachers and the head of the Division of Corrections.

May the God we look to for mercy, grant us a pardon for our transgressions, and open our spirits to a vision of once again being a shinning light in a troubled world.
