WV KNIFE AND GUN CLUB - Man Killed, Cabell Deputies Shot

(10/31/2019)
MAN KILLED, DEPUTIES SHOT - Two Cabell County deputies were shot and a suspect was killed as the deputies were serving a warrant at a home in Ona Wednesday night.

Cabell County Sheriff Chuck Zerkle said the deputies were executing a search warrant at a home in the 4000 block of Blue Sulphur Road around 6:30 p.m. to obtain stolen property.

Zerkle said when deputies tried to enter the home they were obstructed by two men inside. A SWAT team was able to get inside the home and one of the men immediately started shooting at the deputies, Zerkle said.

Deputy Jimmy Johnston was shot in his bullet-proof vest. Deputy Jared Cremeans was shot three times in the hand and shoulder. Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

"We deal with it. We train for it every day. You don't want it to come to this. The best thing about today is that my guys are all still alive and we all get to go home," Zerkle said.

Zerkle said deputies returned fire and one of the men inside the home, Michael Pinkerman was shot and killed. His father was shot and wounded. Zerkle said he was taken into custody and will be charged. It is unclear what those charges will be.

Zerkle said deputies had been at the home earlier in an attempt to interview the men and it "did not go well," so deputies returned Wednesday evening with a search warrant.

"It was a close call, but they were protected, they were trained and God was with them and we get to go another day," Zerkle said.
