CALLERS STRETCH CALHOUN CONTROL - "A Thousand Calls" During Storm

(02/25/2003)

Senior 911 dispatcher Burl Postalwait (front) and dispatcher Mike Little (rear) handle calls at Calhoun Control last night after electric service went down again for a brief period.

During the past nine days Postalwait said "We must have had a thousand calls," unable to validate the exact number because a computer went down. Calhoun's 911 center struggled through several crisis situations, operating on battery power, back-up generator and disrupted phone service. Even 911 lines went out for periods. "At one time we didn't have heat or water," said Postalwait. "With lots of help, we kept rebounding," he said.
